Location and history
The Payagala Jayanthi Children’s Home is located approximately 30 minutes by car from Bentota. After the reopening of the home four years ago, a local person managed it for the first two years. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, tourism and consequently the homes, which were supported by the local population, suffered greatly: as larger parts of the population lack the most basic necessities, there is often nothing left for the orphanages.
For this reason, Srilankapoint is now making a long-term commitment to the home.
The Children
Currently, the home accommodates 31 boys aged 4 - 18 years. During our visit we came to realize that this orphanage is not up to standard compared to the other homes. Thus, in a first phase, we are now taking care of raising the money for the most essential changes. At the same time, we have already started to organize support for the school lessons. We are also in close contact with the current warden of the home in order to build up a relationship of trust and to enable prolific cooperation. Only then can we offer the children effective support and achieve our goal of developing the home into an institution that respects the rights of children.
